The more often and intensively the children in the pre-primary education get in touch with written culture, the more likely they are to master reading and writing during their early days in the first grade of primary education. Researches prove that flaws in various language competences of pre-school age children might be an indication for dyslexia or dysgraphia. They may also affect the training the of elementary reading and writing skills at the beginning of compulsory schooling and thus discriminate learners during the initial stage of their education. Another problem might be the insufficient level of competence in the teaching language, the language used during the teaching process, particularly for children from bilingual environment, children of foreigners living in Slovakia, as well as children of Slovak citizens living in one of the EU countries. This is connected with the development of teachers and their professional competence in relation to the multicultural school. The curricular reform in Slovak schools, which is actually still in progress, brought significant changes in the content and form of language and communication within the pre-primary, as well as primary education. These changes are based on the needs of our school system, but also on the modern trends in education concepts of the EU countries. We have to admit that changes bring a lot of progress, but also many shoals and problems. These problems very often serve as the basis of educational research. In this paper, we focus mainly on trends and issues of linguistic literacy and the elementary reading and writing skills of children standing on the threshold of their education, i.e. when entering elementary school. We will also take a closer look on teachers’ competences necessary to teach the teaching language in a multicultural school. The topic is explored in a research under the VEGA 1/0598/15 project titled Children On The Threshold Of Education And Their World , in the project of the Slovak Ministry of Education Influence Of Education And Socio-Cultural Factors On The Formation Of National Identity at the Faculty of Education of UMB in Banská Bystrica Kategória publikačnej činnosti ABC Číslo archívnej kópie 40960 Kategória ohlasu KOVÁČOVÁ ŠVECOVÁ, Zuzana - SMALLEY, Dagmara.
