Its main aim is to reveal which gender stereotypes are explicitly or implicitly present in commonly used contemporary Spanish Phraseological Units (PUs). In order to achieve this goal, 407 PUs associated with men and women and excerpted from a dictionary of current Spanish phraseology have been analyzed using the research possibilities provided by the cognitive linguistics approach to phraseology. In order to systematize the analysis, an inventory of stereotypes has been collected and split into five thematic categories: physical characteristics; attitude, personality and abilities; sexuality; family; activities and professions. Moreover, a sixth, transversal category has been added – the opposite male and female conceptualizations of the passing of time. Para este propósito, han sido analizadas de forma sistemática cientos de unidades fraseológicas espaňolas e inglesas de uso común y sus respectivas traducciones checas. Los datos fueron extraídos del corpus paralelo checo Intercorp. The aim of the paper is to relate the sort of phraseological motivation in the source texts to the decisions taken by the translators for the goal texts (identical idioms, equivalent idioms, calques, paraphrasing...). For this purpose hundreds of commonly used English and Spanish phraseological units and their Czech translations were systematically analysed. In order to systematize the process of analysis, it was split into six thematic categories: physical characteristics; attitude, personality and abilities; sexuality; family; activities and professions; age. In order to achieve this goal, diverse theoretical approaches have been taken into account – a) gender studies, b) new perspectives on the study of phraseology (conceptual motivations and cultural implications), c) studies relating language, thought and culture (linguistic worldview). In general, it can be stated that Spanish phraseology reflects the subordination of women in society.
