Descr. články - journal articles Language Slovak Country Slovak Republic Annotation The Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) is a native protected mammal species in Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area (PLA) (northern Slovakia). A field survey and evaluation of the conservation status of the otter population and its habitats was made between May 2021 and November 2022 in 5 Sites of Community Importance (SCIs) in the Horná Orava PLA: Jelešňa (SKUEV0222; 65.469 ha); Jelešňa (SKUEV2222; 93.437 ha); Oravská vodná nádrž (SKUEV0304; 252.114 ha); Oravská vodná nádrž (SKUEV2304; 394.775 ha); Ústie Bielej Oravy (SKUEV0658; 66.068 ha); for the purpose of preparing management programmes for these areas. Currently, the otter permanently and year-round inhabits all larger water bodies in the Horná Orava PLA, or littoral zone of the Orava Reservoir. During the one-off otter mapping in February and May 2022, all 9 controlled quadrates of the Databank of Slovak Fauna (DSF) (ca 10 × 12 km) in the region were positive. Estimated otter population size in the Horná Orava PLA is 25 - 30 individuals. The current main pressures and threats affecting otters are traffic and road accidents, destruction and fragmentation of habitats, water pollution, the use of water resources, illegal hunting and persecution, diverse offer of suitable and available food and its seasonal changes, etc. The conservation status of the otter in the Horná Orava PLA is favourable (FV). It is also favourable in two SCIs (Jelešňa SKUEV0222 and SKUEV2222), but it is unfavourable – inadequate (U1) in 3 SCIs (Oravská vodná nádrž SKUEV0304 and SKUEV2304; Ústie Bielej Oravy SKUEV0658), due to the relatively small area of their suitable habitats for otter. Nevertheless, he is a relatively unknown personality in zoology and nature conservation. He published in many popular and scientific journals such as "Vadászlap", "KarpathenPost", "Die Karpathen", "A Természet", "Sylvia", "Aquila" and "Lovec". Bethlenfalvy promoted the establishment of the Tatra National Park despite a negative response from the local population which resulted in protest meetings and articles in the local press. Ernest Bethlenfalvy was an advocate for the protection of the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra L) and endorsed this in several articles and chapters of his publications. In June 2019, the Slovak Republic submitted a report on the status of habitats and species (reporting) according to Article 17 of Directive No. 92/43 / EEC ('Habitats Directive') for the period 2013–2018, which also assessed the status of the Eurasian otter for the Alpine and Pannonian bioregion in Slovakia. Since 2013 the State Nature Conservancy of the Slovak Republic in cooperation with external experts has been carrying out monitoring of the Eurasian otter at 149 permanent monitoring sites. The following article summarizes the monitoring and reporting results of the Eurasian otter in Slovakia. Banská Bystrica (Slovensko) Zvolen (Slovensko) Language Slovak Country Czech Republic systematics 57 Annotation In the last two decades an increase and a colonizing tendency of the otter population in the Hron River catchment have been registered. The increase was most pronounced in the central part of the catchment and probably is related with the improvement of surface water quality in the 1980s and 1990s. This species also uses the urbanized environment of cities. We recorded 11 killed otters during 5 years (2013 – 2017) on the roads in settlements between Banská Bystrica and Zvolen (5 cases in Zvolen, 3 in Banská Bystrica, 2 in Sliač a 1 in Vlkanová). In two cases otters were killed on the speed communication ( R1 in Banská Bystrica-Radvaň), in five cases on the first class roads (4 on I / 16 and 1 on I / 69), in two cases on third class roads (Sliač, Vlkanová) and in two cases (Banská Bystrica-Kremnička and Zvolen-Harajch) on local communications. Spatial representation of secondary landscape structure elements – artificial areas in the 1 000 m buffer circles makes up from 15,54 % (Banská Bystrica-Kremnička) to 78.28 % (Zvolen, Harajch), average is 45,10 %. Spatial representation of built-up-areas in the 1 000 m buffer circles was similarly the lowest in Banská Bystrica-Kremnička (0,18 %) and the highest in Zvolen, Harajch (12,64 %), with an average of 5,38 %. Distance of places of death from the Hron river in the 1 000 m buffer circles were from 30 m (Banská Bystrica-Radvaň) to1 220 m (Sliač, near railway crossing), average 241,4 m. This issue needs to be monitored and solved. URL Link na zdrojový dokument Public work category BEE No. of Archival Copy 41099 Catal.org. At present the otter occurs in most parts of the country. Coexistence of otters and humans involves many conflicts. The most important negative factors affecting otters are road kills, destruction and fragmentation of habitats, illegal hunting and killing, water pollution, the use of hydrological resources etc. Despite the general prohibition of hunting protected animals in Slovakia, the cases of shooting, beating to death or capture of otters in traps or in fyke nets are considerable and indicate insufficient awareness of their protected status. Most of these threats are tending to increase. URL Link na plný text Public work category AFC No. of Archival Copy 41091 Catal.org. Aim of this paper was to find out the attitudes of primary school students from all over Slovakia towards Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra). The survey was carried out in 2013 and 2014. The investigation into pupils’ attitudes was based on a questionnaire survey. The results show that the majority of pupils know otter and its food. Most of the information about otter they received from the school, television and internet. School children have positive attitudes toward otters and their conservation. Most of them demonstrated their willingness to be engaged in the protection of otters.
