AnotáciaThe aim of the paper is to determine the granulometric composition of chip removed from the beech lumber milling process using a CNC machining center SCM Tech Z5 in the range of commonly used technical and technological parameters under standard conditions of feed speed: v(f) = 1 divided by 5 m.min(-1) and the thickness of the removed layer: e = 1, 3 and 5 mm. Another goal of the paper was to select a suitable separation technique that would be sufficient to effectively capture the largest possible dispersion of fractions in the beech lumber milling process. Granulometric analysis showed that under the given conditions in the milling process the largest proportion of coarse and medium coarse fraction is formed and particles with a size smaller than 32 mu m are not formed. For this reason, it is our recommendation to choose a combination of dry mechanical separators together with fabric filters, as mechanical separators are able to capture mainly larger particle fractions. Fabric filters would serve to trap any finer particles, thus saving the user from greater wear of the coarse and medium coarse fractions, which would increase the wear of the filter cloth to an increased extent.

AnotáciaThe purpose of the study was to measure the Brinell hardness (HB) of six wood species and evaluate the ability to recover the depth of the imprint (self-re-deformation). Straight-grain clear samples of ash, beech, alder, birch, iroko, and linden wood were prepared. Measurements were made in the three main reference timber cross-sections: radial (R), tangential (T), and axial/longitudinal (L) and with two measuring loads of 30 kG and 100 kG (294.2 N and 980.7 N). The tested wood species could be classified into hard (ash, beech), medium-hard (alder, birch, iroko), and soft (linden) wood species. The HBs of each tested wood species differed in the cross-sections, i.e., side hardness (R, T) and end hardness (L). Higher HB values were obtained at 100 kG load in all species and all three cross-sections. The lowest influence of the measurement force value on the HB value was revealed for the soft wood species (linden: 107–118%). This influence was visible for the other five medium-hard and hard wood species, ranging from 125% to 176%. The percentage of temporary imprint in total imprint depth (x/H) varied from 12 to 33% (linden 12–18%—the lowest self-re-deformation ability; beech 25–33%—the highest self-re-deformation ability). The results of this study underline that the higher the density of the wood, the higher the Brinell hardness, and, simultaneously, the greater the measurement force used, the higher the Brinell hardness measured. The ability of self-re-deformation in wood’s R and T cross-sections depends on the wood density and the measuring force used. In contrast, this ability only depends on the wood density in the L cross-section. Those observations imply that the compaction of the cell structure during side compression is mainly non-destructive, while the longitudinal deformation of the cell structure (the buckling of cell walls and fracture of ends of the cells) is to a great degree destructive and irreversible. These results can be used in the construction and furniture sectors, especially when designing products and planning the woodworking of highly loaded wood floors and furniture elements.

AnotáciaThe knowledge of the requirements and specifications of the current, as well as potential customers, is a necessary condition for the successful operation of enterprises in the market. The goal of this paper is to map and monitor the preference of Slovak customers for colour of wood products. The mapping of the interest in the wood colour among potential customers was carried out using the interrogating method in the form of a questionnaire. The research results were evaluated descriptively and graphically. Respondents stated that they were most affected by quality when buying wood products. Another result is that the respondents focus on domestic rather than tropical woody plants. Although tropical woods are becoming popular since they have a very attractive colour. Most respondents, specifically 80%, focus on the natural colour of wood. Respondents prefer mainly brown matt colours with a distinctive grain, followed by white and grey colours. A smaller number of respondents choose bla

AnotáciaThe granulometric composition of chips and dust from the longitudinal milling and sanding of thermally modified oak and spruce wood over a set of modification temperatures: 160, 180, 200 and 220 °C is determined and differences between the factors affecting the granulometry during these two woodworking processes are defined in the paper. Sieve analysis yielded percentages on individual sieves. Residual curves were used to emphasize the difference in these technologies in the granulometric composition, where a shift to the left signals smaller (finer particles) or dust particles. While the sanding dust residue curves shift to the right due to the elevated temperature of the wood treatment, i.e. towards larger fine particles and medium coarse particles, the chip residue curves from the milling process shift to the left, with a higher share of medium coarse, fine and dust fractions due as the wood modification temperature increases

AnotáciaThe influence of beech bark concentrations as filler in urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesives was investigated relative to the composite forming process and selected properties of final 5-layer beech plywood. Beech bark was used as filler to lower the wood processing waste production and decrease formaldehyde emissions. A combination of UF adhesives filled with different beech bark concentrations as the adhesive was used. Three different concentrations of beech bark, 15 wt.%, 20 wt.%, and 25 wt.% were used in the experiment. Urea-formaldehyde adhesive filled with 20 wt.% technical flour was used as a reference sample. The effect of the filler was studied via its temperature profile during pressing, mechanical properties in bending, water absorption, thickness swelling, and formaldehyde emissions after pressing. The time needed to reach the temperature between the beech veneers, at least 105 degrees C, which was equal to the final temperature filler-adhesive-wood matrix cross-linking, was also investigated during the pressing process. The measurements of the free formaldehyde emissions showed that for samples with non-zero bark concentrations there was a decrease of formaldehyde emissions by at least 46%.
