AnotáciaThe paper deals with the issue of a declining interest in reading among teenagers as evident from a qualitative research group. This study follows up on two studies presented at the ICERI 2018 in Seville, Spain: “Theoretical Scopes of Support for Younger School-age Learners” and “Reading Enthusiasm of Pupils at Elementary School from the Perspective of Pedagogical Research.” In the context of the VEGA 1/0455/18 research project "Research and Development of Reading Enthusiasm with Younger SchoolAge Learners", we present the results of a qualitative analysis of testimonies of 13-year-old students. The question was: “If you have quit reading recently, why?” We have sorted the answers according to three basal categories. These formed an outline for research conducted among young readers. In the process of the previous stage of qualitative research via interviews with learner focus groups we identified three features or factors: 1. characters of readers, 2. the social context of readability, 3. younger learners’ reading preferences. Within this structure, we looked for an open coding of the categories of the causes that led children to quit reading or to feel that reading does not make them happy. We were also particularly interested in the testimony of the children who did not quit reading as they developed a habit of reading during childhood; we analyzed them as well. From the results, we tried to formulate grounded theory. We found out that the interest in reading during one’s leisure time persists for pupils who previously became readers at a younger age. The choice of genre, form, and electronic media are significantly changing. They consider reading as a source of both rest and knowledge; they prefer their own choice of books which often includes books for adults. The pupils who quit reading state the following reasons: reading is boring, it causes suffering, it is a loss of time. These pupils prefer other activities and other forms of leisure time opportunities. They do not see the point of reading; reading does not give them fun and pleasure. These pupils can be characterized by the sentence: “I have never read and never will.” Research findings provide inspiration and challenges for educational practice and the development of reading in primary and lower secondary education.
