This paper reports the results of a study concerning soil contamination by heavy metals at Libiola abandoned copper mine (Italy). This deposit has surely got special importance in Italy because of its historical, environmental and mining features. From a historical viewpoint, Libiola deposit was known since Copper Age, with maximum exploitation at the end of the 19th century. Our investigation plan was elaborated in order to characterize the environmental matrices there, and it provided for inspection of the zones (included in the valley of Gromolo stream) which, according to our preliminary studies and according to literature, could be most affected by past mining activity. Within our selected zones, some soils (even cultivated) were collected in order to check their contamination by heavy metals. Results from the analysis of the collected soil samples showed that the conten URL Link na zdrojový dokument Public work category ADN No. of Archival Copy 44059 Repercussion category KARTAL, Levent - SEN, Aysel - TIMUR, Servet. The study area was divided into several parcels, based on physiognomic features of plant communities. In the order to predict the Hg distribution for the whole study area, the interpolation methods were used in GIS. The plant material consists of 4 plant species: Calamagrostis epigejos, Lotus corniculatus, Leontodon hispidus and Picea abies. The samples were dried, grained, dissolved in HNO3 and HCl solution and consequently measured by inductively coupled plasma mass-spectrometry (ICP-MS) for Hg content. The results show a mass contamination of the dump environment by mercury. The values in soil variable from 16 to 910 mg.kg-1. The bioaccumulation potential of some plant species is also significant. The highest content of Hg was found in Picea abies ─ 24 mg.kg-1. With the regard to presented data, the dump-field could be considered as the risk for the local environment and its study is essential. Source document Web Ecology. Vol. 16, no. 1 (2016), pp. 97-111. - Göttingen : Copernicus Publications, 2016 Keywords floristic composition Cu-dump contamination Language English Country Portugal systematics 502 Annotation The Cu-dump field Piesky is an important historical abandoned mining area in the region of central Europe, well known for the high content of heavy metals in its soil, especially copper, the content of which varies from 933.40 to 1485.40 mg kg1. Floristic and phytosociological research was carried out here during the vegetation seasons in 2011–2014. Altogether a total of 156 taxa of vascular plants were found. The most common species were Acetosella vulgaris, Agrostis capillaris, A. stolonifera, Arabidopsis arenosa and Festuca rubra, which were important constituents of all mine heaps in central Slovakia. We examined a total of 11 phytosociological relevés at various sites, which were selected to capture the variability of plant communities throughout topographical and ecological variability, various successional stages and impacts from humans. They were classified into five habitats: initial successional stages, grasslands, forest stands, wetland and feeding grounds for wild animals. Each site was evaluated in terms of its species richness, index of diversity and the representation of metallophytic, alien invasive species, synanthrophytes and native non-apophytes. This representation is based on species number and abundance, and their ratios to all taxa abundance and species richness are reflected by several indicators, which we have called indexes of metallophytization, synanthropization and naturalness of the vegetation (community) composition. In addition, indexes of invasive alien taxa and native non-apophytes proportion were used. Furthermore, each of the 11 sites was characterized by its basic topographic properties and climatic and edaphic variables, using the phytoindication approach based on the Ellenberg indicator values. The correlation analysis has uncovered several important and significant associations between some of these indicators and the climatic and edaphic variables. The negative correlations between the number of native non-apophytes and temperature (and between their relative abundances in the individual habitats and light) partially confirm that on mine heaps the numbers of synanthrophytes retreat into climax forest stands. Other correlations confirm that synanthropisation of the vegetation at a site is also higher in more eutrophic and less acidic soils for mine heaps. The species richness was highest in the grasslands and wetland and lowest in the initial succession stages, while beta diversity decreased in an opposite direction. Most synanthrophytes were found on grasslands, attracted by higher amount of nutrients in the soil, brought by sewage sludge from water treatment plants during partial recultivation of this mine heap in the years 2000 and 2010. The idea behind it was to support and accelerate the succession, however the use of the sludge may not have been the best option. Despite strict control of its chemical content, a high input of nutrients inevitably increases numbers of synanthrophytes in the vegetation cover. Finally, planting deciduous trees on young mine heaps as a method of directed succession is a better option than planting coniferous ones. The latter trees create acidic litter, increasing heavy metal mobility in the soil. We have found the dump heap Piesky to be a very suitable locality for studying processes of primary and directed succession in extreme environments and their impacts on the floristic composition of vegetation Public work category ADM No. of Archival Copy 36273 Repercussion category RICHERT, Elke - BERNSTEIN, Christian - FUNKE, Lysann - SCHULZE, Caroline. The monograph deals with the country contamination in the area of two abandoned copper mines: Libiola and Caporciano. Libiola mine belongs to the most ancient and most important heritage of copper extraction activity in western Europe (first excavations are dated between 3490 and 3120 BC) and Caporciano was during the 19th century the largest copper mine in Europe. The book presents results of the heavy metal contamination research in soil/dump-sediment, water and in selected plants both at Libiola and at Caporciano. The authors study the also toxic elements speciation and their bioavailability. Investigation of plants, which main purpose is specification of species, which could be in perspective used for phytosanation purposes, is on the present very actual and common. Malachov Language Slovak Country Czech Republic Annotation Mercury contamination of soil, dump sediments from the dumps, groundwater, surface water and stream-sediments in the surrounding of the area of abandoned Hg-deposit Malachov in Central Slovakia was investigated. Soil was classified as cambi-soil and its rH2 factor indicates moderately aerated soil type. The soil reaction (pH) vary from very acid (near the mine) to moderately alkaline in the Malachovský brook drainage. Maximum concentration of Hg (411.3 mg.kg-1) was found in the dump sediment from the locality of old Medieval Hg-fulminate production plant. The correlation between couples Hg/As, Hg/Sb, Hg/Fe and As/Sb is discussed. The pH of the surface water is close-neutral and of the groundwater moderately alkaline. Hg contents are 0 – 403.32 µg.L-1 (in surface water) and 0 – 0.989 µg.L-1 (in groundwater). As and Sb content in surface water is below detection limit while in groundwater vary As content in range 1 to 1.99 µg.L-1 and the Sb content in range 0.92 to 1.99 µg.L-1. The stream sediments contain Hg mainly in form of cinnabarite. The Hg speciation both in soil and in water confirmed presence of Hg2+ (in form of HgS) and rarely also of Hg0. As and Sb are present both in the soil/dump sediment and water mainly in very toxic form of three-valent inorganic As3+ and Sb3+. Public work category AFC No. of Archival Copy 33174 Catal.org.
