For the experts in applied ethics, this inventory of indicators represents a general value inventory, which requires attention, ethical review and ethical audit to determine the extent to which these values support the sustainability ethos and are a desirable and correct part of the value structures in the society. In an environment characterised by value pluralism and institutional complexity of sustainable development, the organisations implementing sustainable development projects face a range of problems in their struggle to achieve the relevant goals while having to address social, economic, and environmental commitments. Transdisciplinarity, as a new way to organise research, reflects in the new organisational and institutional processes. It represents a new type of cooperation among scholars from different fields, practical experts and organisations (regional and international) – and a new type of research. This indicates that issues pertaining to ecology, ethics and other fields cross the borders and the individual disciplines are cooperating. New technologies are of a dual nature. They can make significant contribution to the sustainable production of food, feed, environmental sustainability, and the like. Education itself faces strong criticism and challenges for transformation. Systematically, the importance of humanities, their contribution, the societal need, or the methodological and other self-sufficiency is being relativized in favour of the technical and economic sciences. At the same time, we see how Europe, but not only Europe, finfs itself in situations we have considered reversed a long time ago. Again, we are witnessing an increase in anti-Semitism, nationalism, we hear voices calling for the mob rule, the crowds are moved by the hatred and fear of the different, but also of what is know, and so on. According to several authors (Nussbaum), the crisis of democracy is the result of the crisis of the humanities. The role of humanities is not primarily the creation of profits, and it cannot be by their own principle, the universities are not, and historically cannot be, the business entities. Humanities are the key pillars of democracy, and their irreplaceable role is also in supporting and developing sustainable development concepts. It is related to their longer-term adaptation to new scientific challenges and social trends. Also, in Slovakia, there is a strong call for a more active activation of the humanities to interdisciplinary cooperation and participation in social change. It is necessary to overcome these barriers and their relative closure. The paper discusses the basic attributes of interdisciplinarity, its application possibilities and social significance. Interdisciplinary approach and its correct understanding can become a constructive tool in the humanities, in the creation of integrated research projects, for their acceptance in practice. As today´s social demands start calling again for building values and a good name, we are sure that applied ethics is able to provide an expert service, develop values and skills including moral imagination, empathy, and critical rationality.
