AnnotationDendrogeomorphic methods are in fact frequently used for spatio-temporal landslide behaviour reconstruction. However, their real accuracies have not yet been deeply evaluated. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness and accuracy of tree ring based methods by comparing them with field monitoring data on landslide behaviours. A total of 876 increment cores have been extracted from 219 P. sylvestris individuals to reconstruct the past spatio-temporal activity of the Ľubietová landslide (1977). The landslide re-activation events recorded within the tree ring series of each tree have been spatially interpolated. Those data have been compared with the long-term field monitoring based on the measured changes in the stabilized geodetic point positions. In general, the tree ring based spatio-temporal landslide evolution revealed a higher landslide activity than the monitoring-based one (particularly in the lower part of the landslide).

AnnotationThe paper deals with analysis of spatiotemporal changes in landscape structure based on the selected archive aerial photographs (1949, 1986, 2006) and satellite images (2013) and detailed terrain mapping (conducted during period of 2015- 2016). Studied region represented by north-west part of the Ľubietová municipality cadastral territory (2155 ha) is located in neovolcanic region of The Central Western Carpathians (Slovakia) at the periphery of the Poľana stratovolcano. This peculiar region has undergone significant changes due to its environmental history: geologic development, ore-mining, pottery, controversial land use in second half of 20-th century and catastrophic landsliding (1977). A significant changes in the spatial structure of the territory were caused by synergistic action of political, ecological, environmental and economic factors during the past six decades. The basis for categorization of patches were landscape structure classes of Masný (2015). The main goal was to assess the different changes lasting on the landslide affected areas comparing the stable areas. Research outcomes show persistent broadening of build-up areas (especially at landslide affected areas). Spreading of the settled patches also goes with orchard reduction and decreasing extent of meadows and pastures. Ongoing trend is persisting large size of large-scale arable land. Most worrisome results are current extent of large-scale arable land (42,83 ha) respectively of settled patches (19,86 ha), both covering landslide affected areas.

AnnotationThis paper presents four different examples of practical research methods in a form of full-day field exercises for undergraduate students, directly related to the Geography and Landscape Ecology degree. Following methods are introduced: (1) Geological survey of the river valley, (2) River corridor survey and aquatic biota monitoring, (3) The evaluation of spatial and temporal changes in the landscape structure and (4) Phytosociological vegetation assessment and succession processes in the River Hutná catchment, Ľubietová, Slovakia. Research work, undertaken as a part of this field course, is divided into two stages: 1. stage includes four days of field data collection (students are divided into four groups), 2. stage involves desktop data analysis and processing and the production of research outcomes (data files, maps, statistical assessment etc.). Some examples are presented in this paper.

AnnotationThe Žiarska kotlina basin is one of the intramontane basins of the Western Carpathians. Geomorphological analysis of river terraces, thickness of Quaternary sediments, density of landslides and gullies, morpholineaments and faults was carried out using the Geographical Information Systems (GIS). The aim of the analysis was to understand the role of the neotectonics. The river terraces on the right bank of the River Hron are higher than those on the left bank showing the irregular neotectonic evolution of the area. The difference in height of the terraces on the left bank and right bank varies from 11 to 25 meters near Žiar nad Hronom and from 20 to 23 meters near Dolná Ždaňa. The interpolation of the Quaternary cover thickness shows three regions with a relatively thick quaternary cover, two of them in contact with the adjacent mountains and one along the alluvium of the Hron. The density of gullies on the right bank of the Hron is high. The density of landslides is biggest on the western margin of the basin. Analysis of the river terraces suggests that the Žiarska kotlina basin has not uniformly subsided, and the neotectonic activity is different in its individual parts.

AnnotationLarge earthflow-type landslides are destructive mass movement phenomena with highly unpredictable behaviour. Knowledge of earthflow kinematics is essential for understanding the mechanisms that control its movements. The present paper characterises the kinematic behaviour of a large earthflow near the village of Ľubietová in Central Slovakia over a period of 35 years following its most recent reactivation in 1977. For this purpose, multi-temporal spatial data acquired by point-based in-situ monitoring and optical remote sensing methods have been used. Quantitative data analyses including strain modelling and DEM differencing techniques have enabled us to: (i) calculate the annual landslide movement rates; (ii) detect the trend of surface displacements; (iii) characterise spatial variability of movement rates; (iv) measure changes in the surface topography on a decadal scale; and (v) define areas with distinct kinematic behaviour. The results also integrate the qualitative characteristics of surface topography, in particular the distribution of surface structures as defined by a high-resolution DEM, and the landslide subsurface structure, as revealed by 2D resistivity imaging. Then, the ground surface kinematics of the landslide is evaluated with respect to the specific conditions encountered in the study area including slope morphology, landslide subsurface structure, and local geological and hydrometeorological conditions. Finally, the broader implications of the presented research are discussed with particular focus on the role that strain-related structures play in landslide kinematic behaviour
