AnnotationIt is quite difficult to write a review for this book. I could say that it’s even impossible, or in fact, even unnecessary. Not because it is not attractive enough, professional enough or empirically supported enough, because it does fulfill all these attributes. But because any further verbal expression will only be another weakened experience and more watered down information. Any evaluation would serve as an act of power. I also don’t want any reader to lose the opportunity to experience – understand and feel – this book in their own way. I will therefore try to find a balance between sufficient presentation of content and approaches, while maintaining secrecy and not “revealing” more than necessary.

AnnotationCentral-Slovakian Villager’s Daily Routine. A Comparative Study of Chronological Ethnografy of the Day of 4 Families living in Sihlian Plain 1967-2017 Abstract The paper presents findings of a field research in return ethnography with the objective to illustrate the changing environment of village people. Rural lifestyle appears to be a viable alternative to the urban and city way of living. Significantly romanticized ideas about the village life in Czechoslovak countryside have been reflected in stereotypes of friendly co-existence, self-sufficiency, natural time flow, daily interactions with nature, and harmony with the environment. However, the reality of everyday life was different 50 years ago and is also different today. A time gap of half a century incites a discussion what time is objectively researchable in ethnographic terrain. Detailed records of an ethnographer over time, in a particular location, and related to a particular group of respondents, has a more sustained value of the illustrator and usable source of knowledge. Such was the ethnographic record of daily activities of a villager living in Sihlian Plain (Central Slovakia) in August 1967, and a return field research conducted fifty years later, in May 2017. The authors wish to demonstrate the changes in daily activities of model families, records of which were obtained by their observation. At the same time, the authors point out those phenomena that remain long-lasting and stable.

AnnotationThis article presents two methods of digitisation, digital data processing and digital localisation applied in field ethnography. The Atlas.ti tool was used as an example of analyses of digitised textual, numerical, audio and visual data for subsequent coding in programmes (CAQDAS). The authors focus on coding and the creation of coding sheets. Through the examples from research conducted in the Northern Malohont region, they present the possibilities and limits of the use of coding in computer interfaces. The links between ethnographic findings and field localisation are presented through the application of geographical information systems (GIS). Cultural configurations and diffusions are illustrated at precise geographic locations of the region being explored. Many of the current limitations in the dissemination of these techniques can be overcome by a wider use of digital technologies, the creation of common digital ethnographic databases and by projects support
