Descr. príspevky v zborníku - proceedings papers Language English Country Spain Annotation Today, as a result of migration, more and more people from different cultures are living in the same place. Slovakia is no exception, even though it is not one of the largest multicultural countries compared to other countries in the European Union. Educating children with different mother language can pose a challenge for educators. Multicultural competences of teachers are also emphasized by foreign authors Güven et al. [1], McAllister and Irvine [2] and others. In our research, we were interested in the views of primary teachers with experience of working with pupils with different mother language and which teaching competences they consider important when working with these pupils. We used a qualitative research design. The research sample consisted of 20 teachers of primary education from twelve Slovak primary schools. The research method consisted of semi-structured interviews which, after verbatim transcription, were subjected to content analysis through open coding. The results of the framework analysis showed that the teachers' professional competencies included professional experience gained during their undergraduate training as well as several years of practice. Teachers emphasized the need for an individual approach when working with students with different mother language, a slower pace of instruction, and modification of assessment with an emphasis on verbal, formative assessment and constructive feedback. Cooperation with other teaching staff in the school (teaching assistants, special educators, school support team) was considered important. They also mentioned the importance of creating a favourable social climate in the classroom. The findings of our qualitative research present concrete recommendations that can be helpful to future teachers as well as to practicing teachers. It follows up on broader research contexts and is part of the VEGA 1/0415/22 project. The study presents correlations between teachers’ working activities being perceived as the highest load and the length of their teaching experience, age, and school location. The research results show statistical significance between mental and physical loads of activities. Activities with the highest load are: dealing with problem situations and pupil conflicts and individual care of pupils with special educational needs – SEN. The school classroom as a social group brings together different pupils among whom different social relationships are formed. Even in Slovak primary schools there are more and more pupils from different cultural backgrounds and with different mother language. Various foreign studies [1], [2] point to the specifics of relationships in these classrooms, whether in relation to school engagement or multicultural education. In our research, we were interested in the views of primary teachers with experience of pupils with different mother language on the relationships between pupils in these classrooms. We used a qualitative research design. The research sample consisted of 20 primary education teachers from twelve Slovak primary schools. The research method consisted of semi-structured interviews which, after verbatim transcription, were subjected to content analysis through open coding. The results of the framework analysis showed that the teachers' views were that the teacher's behaviour as a positive role model was important. The experience of most of the female teachers shows that pupils at the primary level behave respectfully and in a self-equal manner towards pupils with a different mother language. However, some teachers have also encountered the singling out of these pupils in the classroom. Responses regarding pupils' communication with pupils with a different mother language pointed to pupils' resourcefulness and use of non-verbal communication, supportive visual material, use of a translator or use of another language to communicate with each other.
