AnnotationThe mineralogical composition of the mine waste dumps at Cu-deposit Ľubietová deposit (dump-fields Reiner and Podlipa) influence the chemical composition of the products resulted from the specific weathering reactions of the ore and gangue minerals. The geochemistry characteristics of the mine waste dump sediments, soils, surface and drainage water influence the natural installation of the plant species. The chemical analysis of the dump sediments, soils, water and plants from the dump-field show that they are contaminated by heavy metals: Fe, Cu, As, Sb, Cd and others. The individual parts of the plant tissues (roots, twigs/stems, leafs/needles or in flowers/fruits) are differently contaminated by heavy metals and also the tissues are differently damaged. Also the cementation of iron from the copper containing sulphate drainage water at Ľubietová – Podlipa Cu-deposit has been studied. The electron microprobe study proved that the cementation cause on the surface of iron the gradual displacement of the Fe2+ ions and precipitation of Cu2+ ions, both in form of the Cu-oxides as well as in form of native copper. The confirmation ofd this process at the dump-field area can by utilized for the installation of the Fe-barrier, which will help remediate the landscape elements (water, soil, plants etc.)

AnnotationMercury contamination of soil, dump sediments from the dumps, groundwater, surface water and stream-sediments in the surrounding of the area of abandoned Hg-deposit Malachov in Central Slovakia was investigated. Soil was classified as cambi-soil and its rH2 factor indicates moderately aerated soil type. The soil reaction (pH) vary from very acid (near the mine) to moderately alkaline in the Malachovský brook drainage. Maximum concentration of Hg (411.3 mg.kg-1) was found in the dump sediment from the locality of old Medieval Hg-fulminate production plant. The correlation between couples Hg/As, Hg/Sb, Hg/Fe and As/Sb is discussed. The pH of the surface water is close-neutral and of the groundwater moderately alkaline. Hg contents are 0 – 403.32 µg.L-1 (in surface water) and 0 – 0.989 µg.L-1 (in groundwater). As and Sb content in surface water is below detection limit while in groundwater vary As content in range 1 to 1.99 µg.L-1 and the Sb content in range 0.92 to 1.99 µg.L-1. The stream sediments contain Hg mainly in form of cinnabarite. The Hg speciation both in soil and in water confirmed presence of Hg2+ (in form of HgS) and rarely also of Hg0. As and Sb are present both in the soil/dump sediment and water mainly in very toxic form of three-valent inorganic As3+ and Sb3+.

AnnotationRecent design methods of reinforced retaining walls are based on several approaches at the earth pressure determination. Newer methods are developed to bring the design model closer to real conditions. The monitoring of the structures reinforced with the geosynthetics but shows some anomalies at wall displacements and reinforcement loads. A series of real structure monitoring and numerical modelling was involved to verify the recent design methods. This paper represents the results of these analyses aimed at the earth pressure due to the backfill of the wall and at the stress distributions along the reinforcement

AnnotationGabion walls bring convenient way to realize the retaining walls with high level of global stability and aesthetic value. The design methods are based on the exerted approaches for gravity walls without reflection that gabion blocks have some special characteristics that need to be take into account. The major difference is that the bolcks are not rigid bodies and therefore the area of affected loads has its limitations. This paper presents the results of parametric study of gabion walls aimed at the material characteristics of gabions, especially at the deformation properties, that are neglected in recent design approaches
