AnnotationThe Pieniny Klippen Belt (PKB) and adjoining zones form a narrow, but lengthy belt that separates the Cretaceous nappe stack of the Central (Austroalpine) and the Cenozoic accretionary wedge of the External Western Carpathians (Flysch Belt). The PKB shares units and structures of both, in addition to the distinctive Oravic units, derived from a continental fragment in the Middle Penninic position. In map view, the northward-convex PKB consists of two branches—the western one striking roughly SW–NE and the eastern one oriented in the NW–SE direction. The western branch experienced a continuous NW–SE convergence and forward accretion of units derived from the foreland plate during the Late Cretaceous up to Oligocene. The developing accretionary wedge was supported by the backstop of the Central Carpathians. In contrast, the eastern branch originated by separation of PKB units and their dextral translation along the NE margin of the Central Carpathian block in the Late Eocene. During the Miocene reorganization of plate movements in the Carpathian area, the situation reversed. The eastern, formerly dextral transform margin was converted to the frontal backstop of the eastern part of the accretionary wedge. In contrast, the western, previously orthogonally convergent branch was affected by along-strike sinistral movements. Despite these considerable kinematic changes, the PKB remained fixed to both backstop edges and records deformation structures and associated sediments differentiated into several evolutionary stages.

AnnotationThe Manín Unit represents a transitional tectonic element between the Central Western Carpathians and the Pieniny Klippen Belt. The overall map-view structure of the Manín Unit is dominated by elliptical antiforms composed of comparatively competent Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous strata, surrounded by soft Upper Cretaceous shales, marls and sandstones. During layer-parallel shortening, the Manín sedimentary succession behaved as a multilayer reinforced by a variously thick rigid layer of massive Urgonian limestone. The multilayer deformed by flexural slip folding, but the fold wavelength was controlled by the rigid layer undergoing buckling. It is inferred that, besides the lateral thickness differences in the rigid layer, development of brachyfolds and particularly periclines such as the Butkov fold also resulted from the interference of two perpendicular macroscopic fold systems

AnnotationThe Súľov Conglomerates represent mass-transport deposits of the Súľov–Domaniža Basin. Their lithosomes are intercalated by claystones of late Thanetian (Zones P3 – P4), early Ypresian (Zones P5 – E2) and late Ypresian to early Lutetian (Zones E5 – E9) age. Claystone interbeds contain rich planktonic and agglutinated microfauna, implying deep-water environments of gravity-flow deposition. The basin was supplied by continental margin deposystems, and filled with submarine landslides, fault-scarp breccias, base-of-slope aprons, debris-flow lobes and distal fans of debrite and turbidite deposits. Synsedimentary tectonics of the Súľov–Domaniža Basin started in the late Thanetian – early Ypresian by normal faulting and disintegration of the orogenic wedge margin. Fault-related fissures were filled by carbonate bedrock breccias and banded crystalline calcite veins (onyxites). The subsidence accelerated during the Ypresian and early Lutetian by gravitational collapse and subcrustal tectonic erosion of the CWC plate. The basin subsided to lower bathyal up to abyssal depth along with downslope accumulation of mass-flow deposits. Tectonic inversion of the basin resulted from the Oligocene – early Miocene transpression (σ1 rotated from NW–SE to NNW–SSE), which changed to a transpressional regime during the Middle Miocene (σ1 rotated from NNE–SSW to NE–SW). Late Miocene tectonics were dominated by an extensional regime with σ3 axis in NNW–SSE orientation

AnnotationThis study aims at quantitative kinematic analysis of fault-slip data and palaeostress reconstruction of polyphase brittle structures developed in the Manin Unit cropping out in the Middle Vah River Valley of western Slovakia. The Manin Unit neighbours the Pieniny Klippen Belt that follows the boundary between the Paleogene accretionary wedge of the Outer Carpathians and the Cretaceous nappe system of the Central Western Carpathians. After the nappe emplacement during mid-Cretaceous times, the Manin Unit was incorporated into the Pieniny Klippen Belt and attained its complex tectonic style. Based on kinematic analysis of meso-scale faults with slickensides, six (D-1-D-6) brittle deformation stages have been discerned. The relative succession of individual palaeostress states was derived from field structural relationships; their strati graphic age was estimated primarily by comparison with other published data. Palaeostress analysis in the Manin Unit revealed the existence of six different palaeostress fields acting from the Middle Eocene to the Quaternary. The first three generations of meso-scale brittle structures were formed under a transpressional tectonic regime during the pre-Late Eocene-Early Miocene D-1-D-3 deformation. Generally, the maximum horizontal stress axis rotated clockwise from a W-E to an approximately N-S direction. Thereafter, a transtensional tectonic regime was characterized by a WNW-ESE to NNW-SSE oriented minimum horizontal stress axis during Middle and Late Miocene D-4-D-5 deformation. A general extensional tectonic regime influenced the structural evolution of the area in the Pliocene to Quaternary, when a gradual reorientation of the palaeostress field resulted in the development of variable, often reactivated, fault structures.
