AnnotationMercury contamination of soil, dump sediments from the dumps, groundwater, surface water and stream-sediments in the surrounding of the area of abandoned Hg-deposit Malachov in Central Slovakia was investigated. Soil was classified as cambi-soil and its rH2 factor indicates moderately aerated soil type. The soil reaction (pH) vary from very acid (near the mine) to moderately alkaline in the Malachovský brook drainage. Maximum concentration of Hg (411.3 mg.kg-1) was found in the dump sediment from the locality of old Medieval Hg-fulminate production plant. The correlation between couples Hg/As, Hg/Sb, Hg/Fe and As/Sb is discussed. The pH of the surface water is close-neutral and of the groundwater moderately alkaline. Hg contents are 0 – 403.32 µg.L-1 (in surface water) and 0 – 0.989 µg.L-1 (in groundwater). As and Sb content in surface water is below detection limit while in groundwater vary As content in range 1 to 1.99 µg.L-1 and the Sb content in range 0.92 to 1.99 µg.L-1. The stream sediments contain Hg mainly in form of cinnabarite. The Hg speciation both in soil and in water confirmed presence of Hg2+ (in form of HgS) and rarely also of Hg0. As and Sb are present both in the soil/dump sediment and water mainly in very toxic form of three-valent inorganic As3+ and Sb3+.

AnnotationThe quality of natural water in Banska Bystrica region, Central Slovakia was researched by determination of some physical and chmical water characteristics (temperature, pH, concentration of heavy metals Ni, Cd, Pb, Cu, Fe and mn) and levels of high toxicity by means of using Daphnia magna Straus as test-objective. The fact of high over limited concentration of Cu in the surface water and Cd in the underground water was detected in the researched region along wiht estimation of high toxicity levelsw for selected water sources. Some correlation exists between concentration of Cu in the natural water and their level of toxicity.
