Comparing real and referential ecosystems (based on potential natural vegetation) enable us to measure their ecological distance, which is in reverse way to ecological integrity of a real ecosystem. This revision builds on a paradigm shift towards system approach, respecting and including ecological, but also social complexity and integrity as values, which should be inherently present in new solutions. This may help us to revert current unsustainable growth of high entropization of the biosphere and society and thus to avoid a path toward a collapse. We build also on the new concept of the non-equilibrium thermodynamics of living systems, and the model of social ecological system, which we have further developed. We demonstrate a new methodology to calculate a vertical-functional pillar of the landscape ecological complexity (LEC), based on indexes of ecosystems and landscape capacity to dissipate solar energy (and partially also of their vascular plants diversity). From the LEC index we derive a landscape ecological integrity (LEI) index as a sum of landscape ecosystems ecological distance to their referential native ecosystems. Consequently we combine LEI index and the default capacity of the undisturbed natural, seminatural or anthropogenic ecosystem to provide ecosystem services.
