Hron (Slovensko : rieka) basen of river Hron Language English Country Czech Republic systematics 59 Annotation The modified standard IUCN/OSG method for monitoring of the Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra) population – searching for signs of presence of this species, such as footprints, anal gland secretions and spraints in a network of quadrates – was used for three field censuses of the otter distribution in the Hron river catchment. During each census, 48 quadrates (subdivided into a total of 152 quadrants to achieve higher resolution) of the "Databank of Slovak Fauna (DSF)" were checked. The first mapping was held in winter 1995/1996 and 35 quadrates (72.9 %) were positive and 13 quadrates (27.1 %) negative. The second mapping was carried out in summer and autumn of 2010 (during the third one-off otter mapping on the whole Slovak territory - in all 429 quadrates) when 45 quadrates (93.7 %) were found positive and 3 quadrates (6.3 %) negative. Alike the previous mapping, the third mapping in winter of 2011/2012 resulted in 45 positive and 3 negative quadrates. Results of two regional surveys (2010, 2011/2012) document increase in percentage of positive quadrates and in range occupied by otters in the Hron river catchment compared to that in 1995/1996. The increase is most pronounced in the central part of the catchment. The negative side-effect of the otter expansion is the increase of fish-stock damages in the Hron river and its tributaries as well as in small fishponds located in the catchment. As a consequence, fishpond owners show increasing pressure to promote damage compensation or to get permit for shooting otters. Public work category AFG No. of Archival Copy 25882 Catal.org. The mapping was carried out using modified standard IUCN/OSG methodology – searching for presence marks of the otter in a network of quadrates. Results were obtained from 275 quadrates of the Databank of Slovak Fauna (DSF) (64% out of 429 DSF quadrates). The second mapping was carried out in winter 2008/2009 in 54 DSF quadrates (12.6% out of 429 quadrates). During both surveys the otter distribution was recorded in a total of 292 quadrates (88.7% out of checked quadrates; 61% out of all 429 quadrates in the Slovak Republic), in 36 quadrates (1% and 8%, respectively) otters were not recorded. The third one–off otter mapping of the whole Slovak territory (in all 429 quadrates) was carried out in summer 2010 with the “standard” method, 349 quadrates (81.4%) were positive and 80 quadrates (18.7%) were negative. The otter occurs in most parts of the country with the exception of parts of the Western and South–Eastern lowlands of Slovakia Public work category BEE No. of Archival Copy 23932 Repercussion category KROPIL, Rudolf - SLÁDEK, Jozef - GARAJ, Peter - HELL, Pavel.
