AnnotationBraided river floodplains are highly dynamic ecosystems, where aquatic communities are strongly regulated by the hydrologic regime. So far, however, understanding of how flow variation influences assembly mechanisms remains limited. We collected benthic chironomids and oligochaetes over a year across a lateral connectivity gradient in the semi-natural Tagliamento River (Italy). Four bankfull flood events occurred during the study, allowing the assessment of how flooding and hydrologic connectivity mediate the balance between stochastic and deterministic community assembly. While invertebrate density and richness were positively correlated with connectivity, diversity patterns showed no significant correlation. Species turnover through time increased with decreasing connectivity. Contrary to expectations, hydrologic connectivity did not influence the response of community metrics (e.g. diversity, density) to floods. Invertebrate composition was weakly related to connectivity, but changed predictably in response to floods. Multivariate ordinations showed that faunal composition diverged across the waterbodies during stable periods, reflecting differential species sorting across the lateral gradient, but converged again after floods. Stable hydrological periods allowed communities to assemble deterministically with prevalence of non-random beta-diversity and co-occurrence patterns and larger proportion of compositional variation explained by local abiotic features. These signals of deterministic processes declined after flooding events. This occurred despite no apparent evidence of flood-induced homogenisation of habitat conditions. This study is among the first to examine the annual dynamic of aquatic assemblages across a hydrologic connectivity gradient in a natural floodplain. Results highlight how biodiversity can exhibit complex relations with hydrologic connectivity. However, appraisal of the assembly mechanisms through time indicated that flooding shifted the balance from deterministic species sorting across floodplain habitats, towards stochastic processes related to organisms redistribution and the likely resetting of assembly to earlier stages

AnnotationMining and metallurgy have caused vast devastation of the landscape in the past and left its legacy on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems all over the world. Lake sediments provide a continuous record for tracking and better understanding of human-environment interactions related to historical mining and metallurgical activities. Here, we present the analysis of pollen, diatom, cladoceran and chironomid record combined with Pb-21(0) dating, lithology and organic content of the sediments of Velka Richnava reservoir, located in an area intensively mined for polymetallic ores since the end of the 11th century (Banska Stiavnica region, Central Europe). Our aim was to reconstruct the changes in the vegetation cover in the catchment and aquatic biota initially caused by mining and after its cessation by changed management practices. Pollen analysis suggests an open landscape shaped by different land-use during and after the period of active mining toward increased grazing pressure and nutrie

AnnotationChironomid stratigraphic changes were studied in three man-made reservoirs situated in a region intensely used for mining in the past (Banska Stiavnica, Central Europe). The reservoirs were built in the first half of the 18th century and are remnants of a former hydro-energetic system that provided water for mining and smelting facilities until the 1920s. Sediment cores spanning the last 170- 200 years were sampled and dated. A total of 58 taxa were identified, with the most common taxa being Cladotanytarsus mancus-type, Polypedilum nubeculosum-type, Procladius spp. and Tanytarsus spp. Changes in the subfossil assemblages suggest that all reservoirs followed similar developmental trends. The low number of chironomid remains and the prevalence of littoral and rheophilic taxa characterize the initial phase, with severe water level fluctuations and unproductive conditions. A dramatic shift in both the qualitative and quantitative structure of the chironomid assemblages accompanied the decline of mining activities in the region. The second period of reservoir development was linked to changes in sediment composition and an increase of sediment organic content. In this phase, chironomids indicate nutrient enrichment, and the development of a hypoxic profundal zone, and complex littoral habitats. Since the 1970s, changes in the assemblage structure indicate a reduction in the profundal fauna and an increasing importance of the littoral taxa. Despite the significantly different usage of the reservoirs after the mining phase (recreation and angling vs drinking water supply) the changes in chironomid assemblages were fairly similar and indicated nearly identical developmental trajectories

AnnotationAttempting to help reduce the costs of bioassessment of aquatic habitats, the aim of this study was to estimate how particular substrate types influence the ecological quality evaluation based on a multihabitat scheme proposed by the AQEM/STAR consortium. Samples of macroinvertebrates were taken from the Stupavsky potok brook, a small, 4th order calcareous stream in the Small Carpathians in Slovakia (Central Europe). Eight most suitable metrics for small Slovakian streams forming the Slovak multimetric index on seven substrate types were tested and compared with the multihabitat sample. The Saprobic Index (SI) and Index of Biocenotic Region (IBR) showed considerably worse (higher) values in the psammal and the best (lowest) values on coarse mineral substrates (lithal, akal). Similarly, values of the metrics Oligo (%), BMWP Score, Rheoindex, Rhithron Typie Index (%) and EPT reached their worst (lowest) values on psammal and the best (highest) values on coarse mineral substrates. Psammal sample showed the worst ecological quality expressed by the lowest EQR (Ecological Quality Ratio) value, most significantly differing from the multihabitat sample (Multiple Comparisons of Means: Dunnett Contrasts:8.25, P < 0.01). We conclude that substrate types considerably influence selected metrics. Because of a relatively substantial proportion of psammal in some small Slovakian streams and its marginal influence on the overall ecological quality of the site, we suggest conduct further research addressing the effectiveness of its usage in the water management.
