Economic imbalance between the extremely rich and very poor results in a growing dissatisfaction of the member states’ citizens whose trust in their governing bodies is decreasing. The loss of civic certainties and unstable personality profiles lead them to search for new identities. This study aims to reflect upon the issue of European identity in the light of the historical and political development of Europe and Slovakia.
