AnnotationNeologisms formed through affixation in French media texts The study examines neologisms formed through affixation in French during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research focuses on selected texts from Libération, which ranks among the media with the highest number of linguistic innovations. In identifying neologisms, we draw primarily on the definitions and research in neology by Sablayrolles and his research team. Using the corpus tool Sketch Engine, we analyze whether prefixation or suffixation is the more productive word-formation process. Additionally, we explore whether new neological units during the pandemic were primarily created by modifying the meanings of existing words or through the emergence of new word forms. The research question focuses on the prefix RE-. We seek to determine whether RE- is a productive and frequent affix in the formation of neologisms in contemporary French, specifically within this media genre. The results show that affixation, particularly prefixation, is a highly productive word-formation process, yielding twice as many neologisms as suffixation. However, in our research sample, which revealed nearly two hundred neologisms, despite the high frequency of affixation, the productivity of the prefix RE- was not confirmed.
