AnnotationThe article deals with the issue of the spatial perception and delimitation of Central Europe and the level of cooperation in this region, focusing mainly on the Visegrad Group (also known as V4). The authors describe the transition of the Central Europe and Eastern Europe countries from centrally planned economy to market economy, and the building up of plural democratic systems as well as opening up to the world and identify the key factors which later on led to the creation of various levels of regional cooperation in Central and Eastern European space, especially Visegrad cooperation. The main pillars on which Visegrad cooperation was established were the non-governmental structures (and in fact zero institutionalism) as well as the dependence on political willingness for reaching a consensus. In the article is offered a brief historical overview of Visegrad cooperation, its vital and weakening phases as well as the period of revitalization of cooperation from 1999 and also compare the pre-accession and post-accession period with the year 2004 as turning point. The authors also identify the existing limits of cooperation within the framework of V4 and point out on the fact that despite the aims and priorities stipulated after 2004, it can be said that the Visegrad Group did not succeed to determine any priority of such an importance as was the integration into the EU and the NATO during the pre-accession period. Finally the prospects of V4 cooperation were drafted as well as the urgent need to redefine common priorities and interests
